The Time Value of Time

In finance, we accept a simple truth: a dollar today is not a dollar in ten years. Inflation quietly erodes it, so the same note buys less the longer you hold it. We build entire strategies around protecting against that decay. Yet in the lab, we tolerate a more expensive version of the same phenomenon afar, and we rarely name it. Call it the time value of time.

AN HOUR THAT COMPOUNDS

A scientist's hour is not a fixed unit of value. It is the most valuable asset an organization owns, because it compounds. An hour at the bench does not simply produce one hour of work; it produces the experiment that informs the next experiment, the result that unblocks a colleague, the insight that shortens a program by weeks. Redirect that hour into a punch-out session, a price comparison across six supplier sites, or a manual order entry, and you do not just lose sixty minutes. You forfeit everything those minutes would have compounded into.

This is the inverse of the time value of money. Money left idle loses value slowly. Time taken from research loses value fast, and it takes future value with it. The order placed today is a small tax. The order placed every week, by every scientist, across every program, for a year, is a structural drag on discovery. Repeated tasks do not add up. WHERE THE LEAK IS LARGEST

Procurement is where this leak is largest and least visible. Scientists were hired to think. Every step of manual sourcing is an hour borrowed from the future and repaid at a loss.

The fix is not to ask people to work faster. It is to stop borrowing the hour in the first place. This is why an agentic crew changes the math. So the question for any research organization is not “how much does manual procurement cost today?” It is “what is the compounded value of every hour we keep spending on it?” Measured that way, the case is not incremental. It is the difference between an asset that appreciates and one you let quietly decay.

Time is the one thing a scientist cannot buy back. The least we can do is stop spending it on things a machine can do in a sentence, and let it compound where it belongs, on the bench, doing real, meaningful work.
